In 1926, Harry Houdini lost his beloved mother and became obsessed with contacting her from beyond the grave. Wary of charlatans, he offered a reward for anyone who could tell him the code words he and his mother had settled on before her death. Guy Pearce plays the great magician who is put under a spell by the con-artist Mary McGregor (Catherine Zeta-Jones); but whilst Houdini's attempts to debunk fraudsters and find proof of an afterlife are undoubtedly true, the love story is imaginary in this offering from Australian director Gillian Armstrong ('Oscar and Lucinda', 'Charlotte Gray').
