1947, and Palestine is on the brink of becoming the independent state of Israel. Still occupied by the British, tensions run high between the occupying forces and the Jewish militants eager for them to leave. In amongst this, twelve-year-old Proffy Liebowitz is dreaming up ways to terrorise the British soldiers in his neighbourhood. Out after curfew one night he is seized by a British soldier (Alfred Molina) who instead of arresting him, walks him back home and strikes up a friendly conversation. This coming-of-age drama is set in an intriguing time in history, when the Brits were the bad guys, and fraternising with them was a serious crime. Based on the novel Panther in the Basement, by Amos Oz; the ejection of the Palestinians is not part of the story.
