Widely regarded as the best filmization of Tolstoy's illicit romance in the imperial court of Russia. Garbo is the tilte character, sheltered wife of a Tsarist official (Basil Rathbone) who risks all for the love of a dashing military officer (Frederic March). In keeping with the Hollywood Censors of 1935, the ending is kept delicately ambiguous.
