One of the most controversial films of recent years, this adaptation of Nikos Kazantzakis' novel is essentially about the battle raging within Jesus who is torn between the flesh and the spirit and whose triumph is ultimately one of the will. The struggle which lies between the humanity of man and the divinity of God is everpresent. The Last Temptation, as presented here, is that where Jesus steps down from the Cross, renouncing the fact that he is the Saviour, and then proceeds to live out the rest of his life as a mortal man. Attacked by various fundamentalist groups who claim the film to be blasphemous - it actually follows the life of Christ according to the Gospels up to this point and then offers a 'what if' alternative viewpoint. In the end however, it does not detract from what is laid down in the scriptures. Many critics have labelled this as Scorsese's masterpiece.
