The Portrait of a Lady

With the help of a supportive cousin (Martin Donovan), one of the few headstrong, independent American women of the late 19th century (Nicole Kidman) spurns a lucrative marriage proposal in England only to be duped by a cunning friend (Barbara Hershey) into marrying a duplicitous heel (John Malkovich) in Italy. Jane Campion's revival of Henry James' deft classic makes for compelling viewing.
