"From off the streets of Cleveland" comes the acclaimed filming of Ohio file clerk/jazz buff/crank Harvey Pekar's underground comic book chronicle of the commonplace travails of his daily life. Paul Giamatti plays Pekar, a prickly poet of the mundane, who brings his workaday world to graphic life with help from artist pal Robert Crumb (James Urbaniak), becomes a cult celebrity with appearances on "Late Night with David Letterman," and finds an equally eccentric soulmate in Delaware comics store worker Joyce Brabner (Hope Davis). The real-life Pekar serves as narrator and comments on the hilariously gritty goings-on in this superb film, one of the best of 2003.
