The Saddest Music in the World

Director Guy Maddin's works are like a window to an alternate film universe - this unforgettable feverish whirligig of a movie is the closest the cult favourite has come to mainstream. In Depression-era Winnipeg, Lady Port-Huntly (Isabella Rossellini), an amputee with beer-filled prosthetic legs, sponsors a competition to find the world's saddest music. With his biggest cast and budget to date, Maddin cements his status as one of contemporary cinema's most original auteurs.
