In 1992 L.A. was a powderkeg of racial tension that erupted following the Rodney King trial verdict. A man named Tommy Johnson though it was time for a message of non-violence and created a character called 'Tommy the Clown'. His act included hip-hop comedy and a loose-limbed dance style that came to be known as 'krumping' - a craze that spread through South Central like wildfire. Photographer David LaChappelle's debut documentary is a total knockout.
