Machuca

In 1973 Chile's democratically-elected socialist government was overthrown by a US-led coup that initiated the ruthless dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. Using the politically unstable environment as a back-drop this visually arresting film observes the friendship between two teenage boys from very different backgrounds - Gonzalo, privileged and wealthy, and Machuca from the shantytowns of Santiago. Original and engaging this award-winning film offers no easy answers to one of the most complex periods in recent Chilean history.
