The Rising: Ballad of Mangal Pandey

A valour-drenched historical epic, recalling the 1857 Indian rebellion against British rule, led by Mangal Pandey (played by the charismatic Aamir Khan). Once loyal to the crown, Pandey rebels as it becomes obvious there is a lack of cultural respect from the colonialists. Painstakingly researched and, at the time, the most expensive film made in India, the atmosphere of 1850s India is meticulously recreated as a nation struggles to reassert its own identity. In an ironic aside, Prince Charles performed clapper boy duties on several scenes when he visited the set.
