Shakespeare Wallah

Acclaimed drama from filmmakers Ismail Merchant and James Ivory ("A Room with a View") is an allegory about the decline of British colonialism, told in terms of the brief yet passionate affair between an Indian playboy (Shashi Kapoor) and a British touring company actress (Felicity Kendal). Elegiac and atmospheric, "Shakespeare Wallah" was the feature film that really put Merchant Ivory Productions on the international movie map, winning them great critical acclaim. Interestingly, one of the greatest names of Indian cinema, director Satyajit Ray, provides the film's musical score.
