Kirsten Dunst stars as the ill-fated French queen in Sofia Coppola's lavish take on the bloated 18th century monarchy. Betrothed to young Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzmann) when she was just fourteen, the Austrian noble's daughter knew nothing of court or politics, but soon began to relish the overt opulence at Versailles, despite the growing discontent of the general populace. Allowed unprecedented access to the French Palace, including the incredible Hall of Mirrors which was in the process of being restored, Coppola's colour-drenched vision is based, very loosely, on Antonia Fraser's biography, and undoubtedly honours style over story - but what style. Judy Davis, Shirley Henderson, Marianne Faithfull, Steve Coogan and Rip Torn co-star.
