The impressive debut from filmmaker David Gordon Green ('Undertow') is a lyrical, highly-praised drama set in a small, rundown North Carolina town around Independence Day, where a multi-racial group of children finds its own moral code. Nasia dumps boyfriend Buddy to go out with George, a quiet boy with a handicap whom Nasia believes has great potential. When tragedy strikes, she is proved right, but now the friends must each come to terms with events in their own way. A deeply thoughtful and ultimately optimistic film with an excellent, largely non-professional cast.
