Clint Eastwood's World War II film offers a brutal grunts-eye-view of the battle on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima. It centres on the lives of three soldiers, among those famously photographed raising the American flag, who made it home to tell the tale. The son of one of the men who didn't survive wants to know about his father, and the men are forced to relive painful memories while their lives at home are riddled with mixed emotions and survivor guilt. A devastating story of heroism, disillusionment and the tragic toll of war, that has lost none of its relevance. Followed by Eastwood's 'Letters from Iwo Jima', telling the same story from the perspective of the Japanese troops.
