Frozen River
A powerfully unflinching tale of two women, who, driven by economic hardship, form an unlikely partnership smuggling illegal immigrants across the Canadian border. Ray is a solo mother struggling to make ends meet when she catches a Native American woman, Lila, trying to steal her car. In the process of stopping her, she learns of Lila's people-smuggling operation through an unpatrolled corridor in Mohawk territory - the frozen St Lawrence River that runs along the U.S./Canada border. Together they form an uneasy alliance in this taut and suspenseful thriller/drama; an impressive debut from writer/director Courtney Hunt and winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.
