Affliction
This absorbing drama focuses on a small town sheriff (Nick Nolte) whose screwed-up life - and mental imbalance - can be laid at the feet of his abusive father. He sees his investigation of a wealthy man's death during a hunting trip as a chance to prove himself to his family and community. James Coburn won a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award as the drunken, abusive father.
