A lonely widower and college professor (Richard Jenkins) finds his dull existence suddenly brought into focus when he befriends a pair of illegal immigrants, one of whom has recently been threatened with deportation by U.S. authorities. The sophomore feature from director Tom McCarthy ('The Station Agent') is a humanistic exploration of post-911 values that never loses its intimate feel. Movingly perceptive and undeniably uplifting, like his previous film, it presents a rich and complex world in which disparate people connect in unexpected ways. Jenkins received an Oscar nomination for his textured performance and the film has captured film festival audiences worldwide.
