A magnificent documentary-like war drama produced, co-directed, written by, and starring Noel Coward as the captain of a crew of brave, young soldiers on a WWII British warship. The story is told in flashback as survivors from an enemy attack cling to a life raft. Coward based the screenplay on the experiences of his friend Louis Mountbatten, captain of the doomed HMS Kelly in World War II. It was an ernest attempt to help the war effort for his other friend, Winston Churchill. Nervous at the thought of directing alone he asked John MIlls for advice who suggested he try 'the best editor in the country', David Lean. Nominated for Best Picture and Best Screenplay at the 1944 Academy Awards.
