A colourful and elaborate costume drama featuring fine performances from Bette Davis as an aging Queen Elizabeth I, and Errol Flynn as her flamboyant suitor, Robert Devereux, the Earl of Essex. It was a tempestuous affair that was doomed from the start. Davis disliked Flynn and disapproved of his casting, wanting Laurence Olivier for the part, (though in later life she apparently admitted she had been wrong); when she slaps Essex across the face, she really gave him a whallop and the anger on Flynn's face is quite real. Olivia de Havilland, Vincent Price and Leo G Carroll all provide great support in this grand historical epic.
