Being Julia

Hell hath no fury like the diva scorned in Istvan Szabo's wonderfully entertaining adaptation of the W. Somerset Maugham novella 'Theatre'. Sparkling and literate, this elegant period comedy is a welcome throwback to sophisticated Hollywood fare such as 'Stage Door' (1937) and 'All About Eve' (1950). At times broad comedy and at others light melodrama, Bening received well-deserved kudos for her portrayal of an aging actress unwilling to admit her star is fading.
