Rome: Season 1
In 52 BC, Julius Caesar has just conquered Gaul, and Rome has become the epicentre of a sprawling, and increasingly wealthy, empire. This spectacular and graphically explicit series was an HBO/BBC co-production with a multi-million dollar budget and was shot entirely in Italy, including on the famous Cinecitta sound stages. It centres on the lives of two ordinary Roman legionnaires returning from battle, only to find their homeland is coming apart at the seams. For the most part sticking to history, the violently chaotic and corrupt world of a decaying empire has never looked so good. Winner of 4 Emmys including Outstanding Art Direction, Costumes and Visual Effects.
