Writer-director John Sayles recreates the life and labour conditions that led to the infamous West Virginia shootout known as the Matewan Massacre. In a coal mining town in the 1920's, union organisers come up against strong opposition from the mine owners and violence flares. With Chris Cooper, Mary McDonnell and James Earl Jones.
