Requiem for a Dream

As powerful an anti-drug statement as it is a drama, director Aronofsky's ('Pi') visually hypnotic film graphically tracks the downward spiral of four Brooklyn residents: heroin addicts and would-be dealers, Jared Leto and Marlon Wayans; Leto's girlfriend, fellow junkie and aspiring fashion designer, Jennifer Connelly; and Ellen Burstyn, Leto's TV-obsessed mother who turns to diet pills when she thinks she's being picked to appear on her favourite show. Based on the novel by Hubert Selby, Jr. ('Last Exit to Brooklyn').
