The Ordeal ( aka Calvaire )

This demented Belgian slasher thriller starts innocently enough with cabaret singer Marc (Laurent Lucas) having van trouble in the middle of nowhere. A very helpful inn-keeper gives him shelter and food and organises the repair of his van, but when Marc decides to go for a walk, he's warned to steer clear of the villagers. With good reason, he discovers, when he stumbles on a scene straight out of 'Deliverance'! A perversely comic nightmare that homages genre greats including 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' and 'Psycho' while offering a stylish psychotic quality all its own.
