The Squid and the Whale

Writer/director Noah Baumbach's semi-autobiographical tale of a disintegrating family set in 1980s Brooklyn is full of melancholy wit and sympathetic yet unsentimental characterizations. A top notch cast includes Laura Linney as the free-spirited mum, Jeff Daniels as her embittered literary husband and Jesse Eisenberg as their pretentious eldest son. An emotionally potent and blackly humourous film nominated for Best Screenplay Oscar 2006.
