A charming black comedy about life, death and junior beauty contests. Toni Collette and Greg Kinnear head an eccentric family that includes a potty-mouthed grandad (Alan Arkin), a post-suicidal intellectual (Steve Carell), a son who reads Nietzsche (Paul Dano) and Olive (the drop-dead brilliant Amy Breslin), a little girl who dreams of one day becoming Miss America. But first she has to make it to the Little Miss Sunshine competiton in far-off California. Sweetly absurd and irresistibly moving, this indie road movie is a near-perfect film. Well-deserved Oscars and BAFTAs went to Alan Arkin and screenwriter Michael Arndt.
